Vascular Pediatric Neurosurgery

Neurovascular surgery is surgery that is used to treat problems with the blood vessels in the brain, spine, and/or spinal cord. These procedures can be open (craniotomy) or minimally invasive. A doctor who performs these operations is called a pediatric neurovascular surgeon. A child may be born with vascular abnormalities. Examples of pediatric vascular neurosurgery include treatment for aneurysms, vascular malformations, moyamoya, etc. Symptoms may come on abruptly or may develop slowly over time. Symptoms may include headaches, changes in behavior, etc. CT and MRI are used to evaluate the cause of symptoms and obtain a diagnosis. Depending on the vascular issue, treatment options may include chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, or a combination of these.
