A spine fracture is a dislocation of a vertebra that can cause bone fragments to pinch and damage the spinal nerves or spinal cord. Most spinal fractures are a result of car accidents, falls, violence, or sports injuries. You may experience pain, difficulty walking, or even be unable to move your arms or legs (paralysis). The most common type of spine fracture is a ‘vertebral body compression fracture (VCF)’. Causes of compression fractures include osteoporosis, tumors and certain forms of cancer that can weaken the bone. Many fractures do heal with conservative treatment; however severe fractures may require surgery to realign the bones.
Treating Spinal Fractures
Treatment of a fracture begins with stabilization to prevent further injury. Surgical intervention may include instrumentation and fusion surgery to treat unstable fractures or vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty for compression fractures.
