Embolization

Embolization is a procedure used to close or block a blood vessel that supplies an abnormality such as a tumor, malformation, or aneurysm. This surgery is an alternative option to open surgery, in which a craniotomy is typically used to gain access to the affected area. During an embolization procedure, a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel and guided to the affected area with the help of fluoroscopy (continuous x-ray). Once the catheter is in place, different materials such as metal coils, glue, small plastic beads, etc are inserted to block the flow of blood.
