Sciatica may be defined as a sudden pain that radiates from the buttocks and lower back area down the back of your leg. Symptoms include a tingling or prickling sensation, pain and/or weakness. Sciatica occurs when pressure is placed on the sciatic nerve and the condition may also be referred to as “lumbar radiculopathy”. This pressure may be a symptom of a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, a tumor, infection, spondylolisthesis, or trauma. You may experience difficulty with daily activities such as walking, sitting and/or standing.
Sciatica Treatment Options
Many patients with lumbar radiculopathy may do well with conservative treatments such as physical therapy or non-surgical injections. However, there are situations where a surgical procedure may be recommended. In these situations, a discectomy, microdiscectomy, laminectomy or laminotomy may be recommended to best treat your condition.
